As I finish putting together the finishing touches on lecture portion of my class on food for medical students, its time to focus on the really fun part of this class. For a clinical rotation, they’ll be joining me at a supermarket. I want them to understand what their patients deal with on an every day basis. Ideally, I’m hoping that a higher Food IQ along with some compassion will help to make better doctors.
Two questions for you:
What edible foodlike substances do you think I should introduce to these future physicians?
What real food should they know about?
Post your ideas in the comments section. Forward this anyone you know who would like to see doctors with a higher Food IQ!
I see this is late in coming, but there’s always the next class… I think emphasis should be placed on ubiquitous additives like artificial colors; the general public seems to not even think about such things.
And, although probably already in your plan, coconut oil should have a good study specifically for it, especially about its history and how the public came to believe that it was unhealthy.
YUP, colors and other additives are already in there and you can bet your bottom dollar I covered traditional vs. industrial fats.
The good news is my portion of the course has been doubled for the fall. Students felt it was the most pertinent piece of the curriculum!
