Bread and Circus on Superbowl Sunday

[P1070217] The phrase “bread and circus” was used by a Roman writer to deplore the declining heroism of Romans after the Roman Republic ceased to exist. The government kept the Roman populace happy by distributing free food and staging huge spectacles.

When I see Jersey Shore, the Kardashians and NFL Football on TV with tons of advertisements for food that is not really food, I wonder if we are watching the decline of American civilization.
